Your comment "a bit bigger than a robin" suggests a male Sharp-shinned, but bee.jacbs is right.. it is difficult indeed to differentiate between "sharpies" and "coopers". But I'm sticking to male sharpie! ;)

Nice spotting Skittles.

This is likely one of two hawk species, but they are notriously hard to identify. The sharp-shinned are smaller, but sizes can overlap and therefore should not be the only determining factor in identification. Below are links to both species. Maybe something you saw can help separate them.
