Spiny Lobster katydid

Panoploscelis specularis

Description:

huge, 3", extremely spiny on legs, the scariest looking katydid I have ever seen!

Habitat:

primary rainforest

Notes:

I spotted this out on a night hike. It was just my guide and I and he actually passed by it and didn't see it. At night it's tough spotting because you only see what's in the path of your light. It's easy to miss things looking on one side of the trail for a while, so I could understand how he missed. Still I was blown away to be the first to spot. Over the course of more night hikes, these katydids became a bit common. I saw about 5 of them altogether in about 12 days.

Looks like a spiny lobster katydid, Panoploscelis specularis. Or maybe a different species of the same genus?
