Bristle-thighed Curlew

Numenius tahitiensis

Description:

Adult-sized bird was foraging along the outer reef; took flight. Hard to photograph, but ID was easy.

Habitat:

Coral atoll in remote Oceania. Islet is uninhabited.

Notes:

Local name is Kivi. We see individuals all year round, even though the entire global population is supposed to nest in Alaska; they are known to use Pacific islands during the Boreal winter. Seriously Nationally Endangered.
