Flying Ant (Winged Harvester Ant)

Messor Capensis

Description:

With the first passing storms of autumn giving way to sunny mild afternoons, this delicate little flying ants have emerged in the thousands. As best I can tell they are the winged forms of Harvester Ants which are very common throughout Southern Africa. Here in the cape however with a Mediterranean climate, the first decent rains to start this great show arrive in early Autumn and not Spring/Summer like further North.

Habitat:

Dryer, Open Areas.
