Wilson's Phalarope (female)

Phalaropus tricolor

Description:

Diminutive shorebird usually seen in the water, often paddling around erratically on the surface. Females are boldly marked as shown. Males are gray with more subtle markings.

Habitat:

Along the shore of a large artificial urban lake surrounded by lawns, residential neighborhoods, and some commercial buildings, very near downtown Colorado Springs.

Notes:

I had never seen one of these birds out of the water until now, and it took me a minute to recognize it as a phalarope!
