Snowshoe Hare

Lepus americanus

Description:

Also called the varying hare, or snowshoe rabbit, this species of hare is found in North America. Its fur is white in the winter and rusty brown in summer.

Habitat:

Younger forest with lots of dense cover.

Notes:

This hare is well on the way to completing the transition into its brown summer fur. During this transition period when there is still quite a lot of snow in Calgary, they are a little easier to find by photographers and predators alike.

Thanks. Yes, I have a few images from a couple weeks ago when they were still pretty much white. It was nice to catch one in transition.

I always see images when they are white. Nice transitional shot.
