Being careful is definitely in order! You cannot tell from the pictures but the red canes are covered in thorns, some quite fine giving it a hairy look. I find it nearly impossible to muck about with it and come out unscathed. I tried trimming it back last years so the animals and birds could have the berries without the rest of us being shredded every we walked down the path but found that cutting it caused the whole cane to die.

That looks an awful lot like the poison ivy I've got in my backyard. I'd be careful searching it for fruit...
