Hercules Robberfly

Neoaratus hercules

Description:

This was a huge robberfly that looked longer than its 40 mm. Its muscular thorax had ridges on the dorsal aspect. Fine white hairs were seen around the head and eyes. Legs had a reddish colour with yellow tarsal pads. The abdomen had a dark upperside and pale underside.Wings were dark.

Habitat:

Spotted resting on a tree trunk - suburban garden.

Notes:

Found in forests and woodlands of the southeast part of Australia and Tasmania. These feed on insects in flight.
Family: Asilidae My camera could not adequately capture the details of this amazing-looking creature.
