Your second guess is right, Sarah. The whole thing is a chrysalis (or a cocoon, depending if it is from a butterfly or moth). It is almost hatching, that's why it is so detailed, I think. I am following it, and I hope to get photos of the butterfly (or moth...).

Oooh, shiny! :) so fascinating and beautiful! Not sure I understand it though. Is there something hanging on the outside of the chrysalis or is the whole thing just an oddly shaped chrysalis?
