buttercups

Description:

Commonly referred to as daffodils or buttercups in North Alabama. We have several different varieties that are the first flowers to pop-up in early spring. The scientific name is Narcissus. The color variety is from white, to yellow, to orange. The stems contain no leaves. They are very hardy and can be planted in fields or near other plants. The name may have come from the Greek Narcissus, who became obsessed with his reflection in the water and as he looked at it, he fell in and drowned. Supposedly this plant grew at that spot.
