Spittle Bug

Philaenus spumarius

Description:

Rarely seen as they hide inside masses of "spit" they produce to protect themselves from predators and the elements, the nymph of this species eats and grows inside the froth. They have an embryonic appearance.

Habitat:

In froths of "spittle" generally placed in the crotch of meadow plants

Notes:

To get photos, I removed the spittle from the plant - in this case Love in a Mist in my garden. This one was yellow and I found another that was green on my yellow columbine
