Crane-fly Orchid

Tipularia discolor

Description:

I spotted this fading orchid leaf. Notice how it's turned completely purple? When the leaf is newer, its green on top and purple underneath. The leaves will die back completely before the flowers appear some time between July and September.

Habitat:

This orchid is found in moist humus-rich soils of deciduous forest of SE United States along slopes and stream terraces, and in areas with acid soils, such as oak-pine forests.

Notes:

Spotted in the woods around a detention/retention pond in an office building complex in Kennesaw, GA
