winged sumac

Rhus copallinum

Description:

Just a little seedling, about 10" tall. Leaves long and compound. Main midrib of the leaf is winged, the main ID point. Stems are red where they connect to the main trunk.

Habitat:

In the understory of a longleaf pine/turkey oak sandhill. Must be dozens and dozens of these in there.

Notes:

I'm definitely keeping my eye on this thicket... this sumac has lovely berries that are very very tart, but make a delicious "lemonade". Can't wait to gather some perhaps this fall!!!! DISCLAIMER... IF YOU ARE READING THIS, DON'T RUSH OUT AND GATHER THE FIRST BUNCH OF SUMAC BERRIES YOU FIND! NOT ALL SUMACS ARE EDIBLE! I MYSELF AM EXPERIENCED IN THIS, SO PLEASE USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN EVEN THINKING OF EATING ANYTHING FROM THE WILD!!!!!!! YOUR FIRST TIME MAY BE YOUR LAST..... :( :(
