Relatively small (length ~ 0.5 m) light brown eel with greenish face expressing displeasure at having a camera thrust in its face.
Near shore tropical waters; coral reef ecosystem.
Spotted offshore of Leeward Oahu; location shown is notional. Date notional; year is probable. Species is probably either Undulated Moray, Gymnothorax undulatus or Yellow-Headed Moray Eel, Gymnothorax rueppellii. Original medium photoprint, taken with Nikonos III using flash and close-up kit; print subsequently scanned and image saved as digital file.
Thanks for the suggestion, Thomas. I apologize for the delayed response. Unfortunately, I'm hesitant to agree, because all the online images I've looked at for Gymnothorax fimbriatus show significant spotting of the skin which this spotting lacks.
the center lined teeth and dark eyes, yellow neck. I think this is a rare sighting these days. They hide deep in the reef and only come out at night most of the time. as adults they get black blotches on them.
