There were a number of trees in the cypress swamp at Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge with this red stuff on them. Is this a lichen in its early stages?

Hey Tom after reading how they work on Wiki it seems the red (beta-carotene) takes a while to accumulate so this might be a case of the opposite - older ones instead of younger ??
Mark, I saw quite a few dark red ones, making me think this is a fresh one.
