Description:

Pterostichus is a very large genus of ground beetles with a Holarctic distribution in the subfamily Harpalinae. It has over 1,100 species. The beetles are predatory, but sometimes feed on strawberries. They can be found under rocks and prefer slightly moist, sandy soil. Wikipedia

On tan oak leaf along hiking trail in Forest of Nisene Marks State Park, Aptos, CA

This is not a ground beetle, it's a stag beetle.
Ground beetles don't have antennal clubs.
It is <i>Platyceroides infernus</i> Paulsen 2017.
