Eastern Fox Squirrel

Sciurus niger

Description:

The fox squirrel (or eastern fox squirrel, Bryant's fox squirrel) is the largest species of tree squirrel native to North America. Despite the differences in size and coloration, they are sometimes mistaken for American Red Squirrels or Eastern Gray Squirrels in areas where both species co-exist.

Notes:

An Eastern Gray Squirrel (it looks like to me) with a Fox Squirrel. EASTERN FOX SQUIRREL: A large squirrel with a bushy tail edged with brown or orangish brown. Usually twice the size of the Eastern Gray Squirrel, with a more colorful coat and a brownish tinge to the tail. The most typical color phase has rusty-gray upper parts with a rusty- yellow or orange belly. EASTERN GRAY SQUIRREL: As the name suggests, the eastern gray squirrel has predominantly gray fur, but it can have a brownish color. It has a white underside and a large bushy tail.
