Trumpeter Swan

Cygnus buccinator

Description:

Large white bird averaging 4 to 5 ft. in length, with a wingspan of 6 to 8 ft. Adults have black bills and feet.

Habitat:

Small ponds and lakes with beds of cattails, bulrush, and sedges. Many Trumpeter Swans flock to open water on the Mississippi River near Monticello over winter.

Notes:

A pair of Trumpeter Swans were spotted on the southern side of Tamarac Lake. They were walking on the ice and swimming in the open water along the shore.
