Red wasp

Polistes carolina

Description:

This was waiting for me on my porch. It wasn't moving much or flying, but was clearly alive. Any idea what it is and whether I was crazy to get close enough to get a picture of it? :)

Thanks. That got me on the hunt and I think they are the "red [paper] wasp", Polistes carolina (or maybe Polistes rubiginosus).

Looks like what we call a guinea wasp. But I'm no expert, just trying to help.
