Balkan Collared Ants

Aphaenogaster balcanica

Description:

This species of ant is common here, mainly found nesting in dry, sandy soil. They are aggressive, but don't sting. Ants always guard the area around the nest. These guard ants are incredibly aggressive and interaction with them should be avoided. Their colonies grow fast, but they are not a good starter species for ant keeping. Their queen is semi-claustral and needs to eat during the colony founding stage. They tend to attack other smaller colonies of other ant species. They also have strong mandibles. They are also monomorphic, meaning workers are all of the same size at about 12mm long

Habitat:

Found nesting in arid and semi-arid environments, in sandy soil.
