Donax trunculus
"Donax trunculus (wedge-shell) is a species of bivalve mollusk (family Donacidae) that can be found on the coasts of western Europe and north-western Africa. It usually inhabits the shallowest two meters of coastline and is commercially harvested for food. D. trunculus is a suspension feeder, which means that it is a consumer feeding on suspended particles in seawater. The shell can be found in colors ranging from olive, through chestnut, to yellow-white and is over an inch broad. The sexual dimorphism of D. trunculus is largely gonadal and both sexes are equally represented in populations." enc. of Life
