Eastern Gray Squirrel

Sciurus carolinensis

Description:

Also pictured is an juvenile Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis). We watched as this hawk relentlessly pursued this squirrel until the hawk was visibly exhausted with it's mouth open and panting. The squirrel continued to move to the opposite side of the pole to avoid the hawk.

Habitat:

This one was found in a large open field along a meandering creek amongst many nut trees, including hickory.

Notes:

I was told by a retired Forest Ranger that this is a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk.
