There were several species-specific groups of butterflies licking the ground that day. Salt Deposits or something? Found on the forest service road to Deep Gap, NC.

Beautiful! It's called "puddling". They do it to get minerals and salts that they are unable to aquire from nectar. http://insects.about.com/od/butterfliesm...
