A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Coenobita clypeatus
Excellent, Deanna! It is very good to know that the guides and mindful observers like you take care of Galapagos.
There are two crabs. No I did not place them together. The guides we were with were VERY strict with not interfering with any of the wildlife. We stayed on the path at all times we touched nothing we picked up nothing we brought nothing back to the boat.
Nice spotting, Deanna! Is it two or three crabs in the photo? Did you place them like that for the photo or are they trying to mate? - The land hermit crab on Galapagos is Coenobita compressa, which is found on Pacific and Indian Ocean coasts. C. clypeatus is at home on Carribean and Atlantic coasts. Look at http://checklists.datazone.darwinfoundat... . for more info go to facebook.com/darwinfoundation.
