If this is in fact an Oyster mushroom, they can be ground, cooked, and eaten to help lower blood cholesterol :) According to botanist Tom Volk(see above reference), these are almost always found on dead/dying hardwood trees. Careful trying to eat fungi in the wild unless you have a positive ID, though- some of them can look the same but be deadly!
