Antlion pit

Myrmeleon spp.

Description:

Antlion larvae dig these pits then lurk at the bottom to catch any small animals which fall in. They build these pits in loose, sandy soil, which affords no purchase for their unlucky prey items.

Habitat:

Sandy soil in woodlands

Notes:

I chose not to disturb this pit to try and catch the larva that made it and so cannot ID this organism with any resolution.
