There are many folk traditions concerning the defining features of poisonous mushrooms.[1][2] Unfortunately there are no general identifiers for poisonous mushrooms (only guidelines to identify mushrooms themselves exist, if one knows what mushroom is toxic), and so such traditions are unreliable guides. Use of folk traditions to try to identify edible mushrooms is a frequent cause of mushroom poisoning. Examples of erroneous folklore "rules" include:

Fortunately, some of the best edibles are so very easy to identify and are "foolproof" - David Arora's definition - his books are excellent for would be mushroomers, however, unless you are really good at ID's from books, I recommend you have a mentor too. As a friend once joked, "there are old mushroomers and there are bold mushroomers, but there are no old bold mushroomers!"
I'm pretty sure it is a waxy cap... which are edible, but even so there, is there enough mushroom there to even consider trying. While it is a good idea to assume that any mushroom you don't know is toxic, I hate that this is the first thing people think about when they see a mushroom spotting! I love mushroom hunting and know about a dozen edibles. My guess is golden waxy cap, and I'm hoping someone will confirm

So there are no hard and fast rules! that makes it even more trickier!
Surprisingly, a lot of yellow mushrooms are edible, if not particularly taste-worthy! Many of the dull drab ones are quite toxic.
