I'm not sure what you mean by catalog them, but as far as identifying them there should be great websites for your state.
By Googling "reptiles in NY" I got this great website, http://nyfalls.com/wildlife/reptiles-amp...
"mammals in NY" http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/263.html
"fishes in NY" http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/269.html
"plants in NY" http://acris.nynhp.org/plants.php http://newyork.plantatlas.usf.edu/
"birds in NY" http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/271.html

All of those looked like pretty reputable sites that could be quite helpful with IDing things. But there's also no harm in uploading unknown spottings here, that's what the site is for! Many users search the database daily looking for things they can ID for other people.

Awesome..It's a little difficult to find out what the species of plants and such are. Just out of curiosity, do you have any helpful hints on how to identify and catalog spottings?

Thanks April :) Only species name is needed, but doing it the way you have done is fine too!

He gave you the taxonomic break down in hopes you would enter the scientific name into the appropriate box. Spottings are considered incomplete and unidentified until the scientific name is added
