Hello mauna. The way I told them apart is that the Halloween pennant's dark patches are very distinct with straight edges and in a more rigidly characteristic pattern. In addition, Perithemis tenera's abdomen is also "often" thicker or with a bulge in the middle.
Thanks for the clarification, Fyn! I don't know, maybe the scale of the photo is deceptive, but this dragonfly looks small to me.
mauna Kunzah, Perithemis tenera is very small (second smallest dragonfly in the US), around two inches long while Celithemis eponina is quite large.
Epicology, I'm curious, how do you tell apart the Eastern amberwing from the Halloween pennant (Celithemis eponina)? Halloween pennant pics below:
