Description:

The gestation period for tapirs is 400 days with only one offspring being born; weaning occurring another year later. Hunting and habitat loss have led to this species becoming listed as vulnerable, partially due to their lengthy reproductive process.

Habitat:

Forests in Central and Southern America.

Notes:

The tapir is the largest land mammal in Central America.
