Widow Skimmer dragonfly (female)

Libellula luctuosa

Description:

A Widow Skimmer dragonfly spotted at Hidden Pond. This individual is a female, as indicated by its coloration and terminal appendages. Notice anything unusual about Photo 1 (of 3)? Female dragonflies have a pair of cerci (superior appendages), so what is the third "appendage" between this dragonfly's cerci? Well, I may have scared the excrement out of the dragonfly!

Habitat:

Specimen spotted on the earthen dam at Hidden Pond, a small lake located at Meadowood Recreation Area in Fairfax County, Virginia USA. Related Resource: Meadowood Recreation Area Trail Map (PDF) http://www.blm.gov/pgdata/etc/medialib/b...
