Hoary Comma

Polygonia gracilis

Description:

When it opened its wings, the inside was orange but with similar markings. Couldn't catch a photo of that though. About an inch long, jagged edges on its wings make it very leaf looking.

Hi @Porcupine, thw butterfly was a Hoary Comma (Polygonia gracilis)
http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/speci...
or a Satyr Comma (Polygonia satyrus)
http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/speci...
Both species are similar, but if you had a good dorsal view you might be able to ID the species yourself...
