Beaver

Castor canadensis

Description:

Beaver family in downtown Martinez CA. The portion of Alhambra Creek, where these animals were photographed and videotaped, is adjacent to the Martinez Amtrak Intermodal station, just below a pedestrian foot bridge. Visitors to downtown Martinez routinely stop by in the early mornings and evenings to watch as the family of beaver forage and build their dam(s).

Habitat:

The Alhambra Creek Watershed covers approximately 16.5 square miles (43 km2) in north central Contra Costa County and encompasses a portion of the city of Martinez. The combined branches flow through Briones Valley, valleys containing open space, wildlife habitat, residential and commercial areas, through downtown Martinez and then discharge into the Carquinez Straits through a tidal wetland at the Martinez Regional Shoreline.

Notes:

As a result of beavers inhabiting Alhambra Creek is bio diverse. It is common to spot river otter, mink, pacific pond turtles along with a wide array of water fowl.
