Argiope aurantia
This spider has a peanut sized body with relatively long legs. It is black with yellow markings, and is spinning a very thick web. The web has the classic zig zag pattern.
It has made its home around my house in Southeastern North Carolina, about 10 miles from the beach. It doesn't seem to favor light or darkness.
