Sculptured Pine Borer

Chalcophora virginiensis

Description:

A large Jewel Beetle in the family Buprestidae, Chalcophora virginiensis feeds as a larva for years on Pine (Pinus sp.) Trees. It is quite large.

Habitat:

Found right on the coast of Maine at Ferry Beach State Park. There were Pines (Pinus sp.) on the dunes before the beach, and quite a few of these beetles were straying near the ocean.
