Ostrich Fern

Matteuccia struthiopteris

Description:

Very plentiful in this location. These are prized for their edibility and are also referred to as fiddleheads. Identified by the deep groove going up the stem (see photo 2) and the flaky brown scales covered the new sprout (many other local ferns are more fuzzy at this stage instead of flaky).

Habitat:

Floodplain of a river in sandy soil.
