3 inches, brown spotted frog
Machado Lake is a heavily polluted remnant wetland. It is fed by the Wilmington Drain and many storm drain outfalls.
There were dozens of them along the edge of the lake. They city is doing restoration work and ripping out all the invasive plants that thrive on the high nutrient load from the golf course and urban runoff.
I agree a young Bullfrog could look like this. But I can't find an image of a bullfrog with a white eyering like this one has.
There are only two frogs within range that match most of these characteristics, the Bullfrog and The California Red-legged Frog. The latter has a distinctive white stripe from the lip to the shoulder, and the toes aren't fully webbed on the back feet. This frog does not have that stripe and the toes on the back feet are fully webbed, making it a Bullfrog, although I will admit this is a strange looking one, but pattern and color mean nothing in amphibians.
I would say this is a bullfrog, although I can't make out the tympanum. Bullfrogs can definitely have that dorsal pattern and eye coloration.
I am curious too. I am enlisting help from experts. It's the white ring around the eyes that got me.
