Ursus americanus
Black bears are a bulky mammal. They grow on average to a size of 150 cm long and a height at the shoulder of about 100 to 120 cm. Adult black bears have straight facial profiles and a proportionate sized head. Ears are rounded and upright, and the eyes are quite small. The tail is very short and barely noticeable. The black bear's fur is generally black, but can have variations of brown, dark brown and cinnamon. The muzzle of the bear is lighter brownish colour. An average male weighs about 135kg, while females average in at about 70kg.
Black bears are found in a variety of habitats, although they prefer heavily wooded areas and dense bushland. The majority of black bear population are found in areas of mixed coniferous–deciduous forests, where human presence is low. On average, there is usually 1 bear per 10 km2.
I found this track at my property. The bear was probably curious as to the construction on the site and investigating what was going on (also probably attracted to the garbage left behind by the crew). The print indicates a fairly large bear
