Eastern Hercules Beetles

Description:

In June of 2015 we had a huge hatching of Eastern Hercules Beetles (reportedly the heaviest North American beetle). The majority of these beetles had died overnight. Their colors varied from greenish to yellow to almost black (which is normal variation for this species). The males have extremely large horns (most of the time) that project forward from the head and the protonum. The male in the first two images has a somewhat stunted horn. The females have no horns (third image and the two on the left in the fifth image).

Habitat:

Suburban. Attracted to lights at night.
