Description:

These exquisite galls were on a couple leaves of a shrub, both in the upper and under sides of the leaves. All they present a double, tube like protuberance, with a strong pink color. Size is less than 1 cm (around 1/3 of an inch).

I have no idea so I can only guess. Pic #1 shows a long cut, extending longer than the structure. What can produce this straight line, rare in nature. I can only suggest a sawfly which sometimes makes a cut to lay eggs http://www.ispot.org.uk/node/272938
The red swelling is odd. I think I can see eggs. The swelling on the other side looks odd. There may be a secondary infection causing irritation. I'm thinking nematodes but I don't know why. Nice mystery. Hope it feeds our awe for nature.
