A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Sympetrum striolatum
Males are a dull red in colour, with a slightly ‘clubbed’ end to the abdomen. Females have a similar body shape yet are a fairly dull yellow in colouration.
Ponds and other still, stagnant or even brackish waters are used and they are frequently found at small garden ponds. They are frequently found away from water, resting on the tops of plants in woodland rides.
Newly emerged from its larval case with wings not fully inflated. Its home is a man-made natural swimming pool we've been working on as part of out 'Artecology' range of works designed to bring people closer to nature.
