Cane Toad

Bufo marinus

Notes:

I found this cane toad in my garden last night after hearing the stress call of the green tree frog in shot 2 (see also this spotting: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/419...). Cane toads were introduced to Australia in 1935 to control cane pests, and have since become an absolute menace in Queensland and the Northern Territory. They will eat anything; they out-compete native species, breed prolifically, and have poison glands in their shoulders which kill any animal that tries to eat them (except for smart crows who have figured out that you can flip them over and eat them from underneath). They are also slowly increasing their range. It is standard practice to kill them here - most Queenslanders are quite casually brutal with them, but the recommended humane method is to put them in a plastic bag in the freezer. However, I can't even bring myself to do that. : (
