Western Blood-Red Lady Beetle

Cycloneda polita

Description:

Small red beetle with hemi-ellipsoidal body, lacking markings on its upper abdomen or thorax, ~ 5 mm length overall.

Habitat:

Pacific Northwest suburban area.

Notes:

Spotted on a the stalk of a weed growing next to a sidewalk. Note the dull beige or pale yellow-brown seed- or grain-like structures in the notch of the weed stalk just below the beetle. It might just be a coincidental proximity, but they seem to be the focus of the beetle's attention.
