Spittlebug

Bathylus albicinctus

Description:

About 6 mm long, this dark brown spittle bug looked like a small stout beetle with a median crest. Its brown eyes were set apart like other spittle bugs. The underside of the head was rounded and pale. Each fore wing showed a diagonal white marking.

Habitat:

Spotted on Dianella caerulea (Blue flax-lily), beside several mounds of "cuckoo-spit" which are the spittle shelters protecting nymphs of these bugs.

Notes:

This is an adult of nymphs seen in this spotting: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/401... The adult was seen in the same patch of Dianella as the nymphs in the previous spotting. An exciting find !! These are hemipterans from the Family: Aphrophoridae. This species of spittle bug are known to be associated with herbaceous plants.
