American Coot

Fulica americana

Description:

This spotting is about the behavior in the video. I hadn't witnessed this type of dispute before and I started taking photos with my macro lens before I looked at the camera settings. Well you get the idea :) These Coots are fighting by kicking and biting while trying to push each other under the water and holding them there. A Common Gallinule was watching and yelling at them.

Habitat:

Small pond at park

During the breeding season coots even duke out their differences using their feet. They will go at each other like kick boxers until the issue is settled (when the old coot is defeated by the crazy young coot).
