Solanum carolinense
Member of nightshade family not a true nettle
That's correct, Kelsey. Common names are, well...common names, and they are ascribed by who knows who. However they are often, as in this case, in widespread use. Scientific names on the other hand are meant to be unique for a species and they are the core of a species suggestion. Yes it's in the family Solanacaceae which also includes tomatoes and potatoes. If you are interested in learning how species are named and why this is important, see Project Noah's blog entry http://blog.projectnoah.org/post/2870249... Thanks!
Carolina horse nettle is in the nightshade family and is not a true nettle
