Green Skimmer

Orthetrum serapia

Description:

Orthetrum serapia Watson, 1984, the Green Skimmer is a very common dragonfly in the Philippines and it is always good to see them in great numbers in the rice fields as they play an important roll in the control of insect pests.

Habitat:

This Green Skimmer was spotted on weeds growing along a rice field dyke. Rice fields are usually divided into manageable sections by low walls of turf, which also double as walkways for the farmer when he needs to inspect his crop. I always find them useful for getting right into the centre of the rice field when hunting for bugs. The rice fields attract many different kinds of insects, but so do the dykes.
