Hi Robert. I have no doubt that they are common, but they are not native. I've added the Wikipedia link to your spotting and if you follow it you will see that they are an "exotic species" introduced in many parts the world, so much so, that they made the "IUCN's 100 of the World's Worst Alien Invasive Species list."

Thanks Lori, they are indeed exotic, last year they were killed here by the long cold winter in my park.

This is a fresh water fish common to Florida.
Since this is an African species, I assume this fish is either captive or part of a feral population.
