Western Pond Flower Fly

Description:

A large black distinctive Flower Fly with tinted wings and 3 yellow bands on each side of the abdomen. Lateral hair on the thorax and abdomen is also yellow. This fly was about 11 mm in length and is a not too convincing wasp mimic. It is a flower fly of the Pacific Northwest Coast. Family Syrphidae, Subfamily Eristalinae.

Habitat:

On composite flowers in wooden planters along the dock. Ketchikan, Alaska.
