Elk

Cervus canadensis

Description:

Elk belong to the deer family. Large bulls may weigh 800 lbs. The bulls have large antlers, which are shed each year.

Habitat:

Elk live in forests and forest edge habitat, although these bulls were in a prairie within a few hundred yards of forest.

Notes:

These bulls were on a ridge above the wildlife loop road running through Custer State Park, South Dakota. This is a great park, along with the adjacent Wind Cave National Park, is a great place to find a wide array of wildlife.
